Online storage: Box adopts REST and JSON for its API

The online storage specialist intends to boost its ecosystem of partners. The editor has unveiled a new programming interface to access its service from third-party applications.

The provider of online storage service refound its programming interface. For the moment in beta, the new API aims to strengthen the development of applications using the application in SaaS mode (OneCloud). Based on the REST infrastructure for the management of requests, it relies on JSON to manage data transfers, and no longer on XML. “The goal is to make the interface easier to use,” says Box.

Unlike the previousAPI, the new interface includes an instant provisioning mode for users of other applications who do not have an existing Box account. The API also improves access to certain collaboration features of the hostedstorage environment (such as chat). Finally, Box is also enhancing its development tools for iOS applications.
