Founded in 2008 by Robert Gentz and David Schneider, supported by Marc, Oliver and Alexander Samwer, the e-Commerce group Zalando, was largely inspired by the success of the American Zappos, a company with atypical management techniques, now a subsidiary of Amazon. Specializing in the sale of shoes and clothing online, Zalando is now present in fourteen European countries. Its catalogue is rich with more than 1500 brands. In 2012 its turnover was 1.15 billion euros. Zalando counts among its investors DST Global, the fund of Yuri Milner, already present in China in Alibaba Group and in the United States in the capital of Facebook, Zynga, Groupon and more recently of Airbnb.
